WHAT TO SEE AND DO in La Palma

La Palma, also known as La Isla Bonita or La Isla Verde, is one of the most beautiful and least known islands of the Canary Islands. Famous for its lush landscapes, starry skies and outdoor activities, La Palma is an ideal destination for lovers of nature and tranquillity.

The Caldera de Taburiente National Park is one of the main attractions of the island, with a huge volcanic crater surrounded by mountains, rivers and rich biodiversity. It is perfect for hiking and nature observation.

The highest point of La Palma is Roque de los Muchachos, with 2,426 metres above sea level. One of the most important astronomical observatories in the world is located here, thanks to its clean and clear skies. The views from the top are spectacular.

Santa de La Palma, the island’s capital, is known for its charming old town, traditional wooden balconies and historic buildings. The Plaza de España and the Church of El Salvador are not to be missed.

Los Tilos is a lush laurel forest, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Ideal for hiking and enjoying nature in its purest state.

At the southern end of the island, the Fuencaliente area is known for its volcanoes, such as Teneguía and San Antonio. You will also find the Fuencaliente Salinas and black sand beaches.

Two of the main coastal tourist areas of La Palma are Puerto Naos and Tazacorte, known for their beaches with crystal clear waters and a relaxed atmosphere. Puerto Naos is ideal for enjoying the sun and the sea, while Tazacorte is a picturesque fishing port.

The waters of La Palma are perfect for diving and snorkelling. There are several diving centres that offer excursions to explore marine life and underwater landscapes.

If you want to enjoy the Palma gastronomy, try the wrinkled potatoes with “mojo”, the “bienmesabe”, a typical almond dessert, the goat cheese, the “gofio”, a toasted cereal flour that is used in many dishes, or the fresh fish, like the old, grouper and tuna.

The Festival of the Descent of the Virgin of the Snows, every five years, is the most important festival in La Palma, with parades, traditional dances and religious events. Although Santa Cruz de La Palma also has its Carnival, of course, with parades, music and lots of colour.
