WHAT TO SEE AND DO in Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary Islands and is a popular tourist destination for its diverse landscapes, pleasant year-round climate, and a wide range of cultural and recreational activities.
One of the most breath-taking places is the Teide National Park, a volcano that is the highest mountain in Spain, at 3,718 metres. You can go up by cable car or on foot to enjoy spectacular views.
In the same environment are the Roques de García, impressive rock formations, ideal for hiking.
The Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos are areas well-known for their golden sandy beaches, luxury resorts, nightlife and water activities.
San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage city, with beautiful colonial architecture, cobblestone streets and a stimulating university life.
In the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, we find the Auditorium, a modern building, already an emblem of the city, designed by the prestigious Valencian engineer Santiago Calatrava.
In addition to hiking, diving, snorkelling, surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, the most popular activity is whale and dolphin watching: there are boat excursions from Los Gigantes and Costa Adeje to observe marine fauna.
The wrinkled potatoes with “mojo”, the gofio (toasted cereal flour, used in many traditional dishes), the Canarian puchero (meat and vegetable stew) and wine from Tenerife (those from Tacoronte-Acentejo and Valle de La Orotava are the best known) are the highlight of Tenerife gastronomy.
The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one of the largest and most famous in the world, with parades, music and costumes, and the Fiestas de la Virgen de Candelaria are its most crowded events.
