WHAT TO SEE AND DO in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is one of the most stunning islands in the Canary Islands, known for its unique volcanic landscapes, golden sand beaches and its focus on sustainable tourism.
One of its jewels is the Timanfaya National Park, spectacular volcanic landscapes formed by eruptions that occurred at the end of the 18th century. You can take a guided bus tour of the park and see geothermal demonstrations on Islote de Hilario.
Another of its treasures are the Jameos del Agua, a centre of art, culture and tourism created by local artist César Manrique, built within a series of caves and volcanic tubes, and the Cueva de los Verdes, which is a part of the same volcanic tubes and offers fascinating underground tours.
Located in the former hour of César Manrique, his foundation exhibits his work and promotes art and architecture integrated with the natural landscape of Lanzarote, which is precisely what he wanted to do in life.
Another of his creations is the Mirador del Río, an impressive viewpoint located on top of a cliff with panoramic views of the island of La Graciosa.
Another of César Manrique’s works is the Jardín de Cactus, a botanical garden that houses a wide variety of cacti from around the world in a unique environment.
Another curiosity of the island is La Geria, a wine region famous for its unique method of growing vines in holes protected by stone walls. You can visit local wineries and taste Lanzarote wine.
Some of the most notable beaches in Lanzarote are Playa de Papagayo, in the south, with golden sand and crystal-clear waters; Famara Beach, very extensive, ideal for surfing and kitesurfing, surrounded by impressive cliffs; Playa Blanca, a very popular tourist destination with a wide variety of services and accommodations.
Lanzarote also offers numerous hiking routes that allow you to explore its volcanic landscapes, and activities such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving and snorkelling are very popular.
To eat well, you have to try local delicacies, such as wrinkled potatoes with “mojo”, fresh fish, goat cheese or the before mentioned wine produced in the island.
Like in all the Canary Islands, the Carnival in this case in the capital, Arrecife, has colourful parades, music and costumes.
The San Ginés Festival and the Canary Islands Music Festival, which attracts world-class musicians, are two important events in Lanzarote.
